Final Project – A Narrative:

For my final project, I wanted to focus on a narrative around my daughter who is a writer. For her bachelor’s essay she is writing a creative short story set in Ireland. My idea was to show her creativity at work. In the first scene she is writing on her laptop and the page flies off her computer towards a door that is opening into the world of fairies. She puts her computer down and walks through the door and is joined by the fairy that has beckoned her in. From here the fairy takes her on adventure through the land and flying over rivers. At the end of the journey, they enter the fairy house and back through the pathway to our world.

For my process, I used both Illustrator and Photoshop. A combination of stock photos, for the Irish lands, and photos I took of my daughter and real-world surroundings were composited together in Photoshop. I created the paper airplanes, fairies, and butterflies in Illustrator and brought them over into the composites to add an element of imagination and fun – which is always reflects my daughters’ stories.

Shop Drop!:

In lieu of today’s Covid-19 environment, I decided to go in a direction that might be a bit more controversial with suggested cures that had been publicly suggested. According to the CDC, there are still calls coming in from Americans that have use bleach to “cure or prevent” Covid-19. See this link from June 5, 2020: Center for Disease Control,  and primarily these figures at the bottom of the page: Figure 1 and Figure 2 which are mind blowing that there are so many people that are uneducated in the safety precautions of cleaning products like Bleach. Although the product I have chosen to modify is Clorox Bleach, my alterations are not directed to the company as they do have many warnings on their labels. I have directed them to the people who are naïve and blindly loyal enough to take the advice of someone who is not a medical professional. I am of course referring to President Trumps press conference that he gave on April 23, 2020 (see onYouTube) suggesting the use of disinfectants ingested or injected to cleanse the body of the virus. This has since been walked back by the White House but the damage is still occurring. The warnings I have added include not to ingest or inject.

For my process, I started by doing research on which product to use and was truly surprised to see the numbers were still increasing for those who are still ingesting disinfectants to prevent Covid-19. As bleach was the highest ingested product, I looked at my bleach jugs that I have at home and combined elements from them to form a new label. In Illustrator I recreated the center section of the label such as the text, gradient effects, shape distortion, and logo shapes with check marks. For the warning labels and directions, I placed them as pdf’s and was able to alter the text within them to reflect the extra warnings of not ingesting or injecting for a cure of Covid-19. I printed a label and placed it on one of my bleach jugs, but my printer is not good and it was hard to read. So I used the Adobe Dimension application to render my label onto a 3-D white plastic jug and then placed it over an image of our coffee table. This was a really cool program and I played with it for probably too long as it was fun! I didn’t use Photoshop this time as I was able to accomplish everything in Illustrator with the exception of the 3-D rendering.

Plural Self:

All things that encompass me!

All things that encompass me! Or mostly anyways. 🙂 As I was creating my self studies family was of course my main constant. As a mother of three, I have found that my kid have been my center which is why they are a primary focus overlapping myself. I also added in image of my son making a flying catch during a baseball game. This really represents all of the trips I made to baseball and softball games to watch my kids as they were growing up.

As we became empty nesters, my husband and I decided to have more adventures together. One of these big adventures was our road trip across country and down the Baja Peninsula to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Since this played a role in my continuing identity of adventuring partner, I made these images brighter and more postcard like. Our golden doodles are a major part in our lives and loved every minute of our traveling adventures. The background image is actually two photos from this trip blended together.

The final piece to my identity that I added to this collage is my love of all things Disney (mostly Tinker bell and Peter Pan) and Harry Potter. While I am quite the fan girl, I share the love of these worlds with my husband and kids also.

Roadtripping & Traveling

Roadtripping & Traveling:

As we became empty nesters, my husband and I decided to have more adventures! In this image I show only a small sampling. I used images from a trip to San Francisco of the Redwoods and our cable car tickets. I use transparency, burns and masks throughout.  The majority of the photos are from our road trip to Cabo San Lucas (with the exception of one from the Bahamas). We drove across country from the East Coast to California and all the way down the Baja. Such a wonderful adventure!

Puppy Love

Doodle Love:

Our puppies might as well be considered our children. They certainly act like little humans! Golden Retrievers were the breed we always had until our son developed asthma. So Golden Doodles came into our lives and we have not looked back. Such personalities and so smart – without the shedding. In the top left corner,  I have added my collection of Funko POPs! that represent each puppers we have had in our family. If you can’t tell there is a theme to their naming. 😉 I used many masks and filters throughout.

Quarantine Life!

Quarantine Life!:

Of course I just had to do a piece revolving around the last few months! I did the main drawing in class this past spring semester to make us all laugh. The gloves, toilet paper and social distancing guidelines help too depict the way of the world that we are living in during Covid-19. For tools, I used pattern, burns, masks, color, and probably more!

My Three Crazy Kids:

The joys of my life! When they aren’t making me crazy, as I am sure any parent can relate to. These photos were pulled from events over the past few years. My son played college baseball and loved to make crazy plays in the outfield. My one calm and studious child, I am sure you can pick out, loves photography so this composition was fitting. Lots of masks, filters and blending in this image.

A Not So Secret Fangirl

A Not So Secret Fangirl:

For anyone who knows me, or sees me around town, they can figure out my favorite character and movie pretty quickly. I worked for Disney many years ago and the magic stuck. The background image is the Disney Family Museum in San Fransisco. Also included in my fandom nerdiness are Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings. Also lots of masks, filters and blending in this image.
